Dear Jim, Can a vet rated 100% service connected start a business?

Absolutely! The Denver SBDC has several clients in similar situations. In fact, we have a consultant who works closely with veterans. Contact the SBDC office at 303-620-8076 and ask to schedule an appointment with Andra Hargrave. As always, our consulting services are completely free.

Dear Jim, My business is a lead generation company that produces qualified sales leads. I have been trying to research taxes and am still unsure if i have to charge sales tax on the leads. Can you help? I have tried to call the state revenue office but have not been able to get through for weeks.

It seems clear from your description that you are selling a service, not a tangible product or a short-term rental. Generally speaking, services are not sales taxable in Colorado and you would not have to have a sales tax license.

Dear Jim, How do I register my business in Colorado online?

To register your business in Colorado, go to www.sos.state.co.us and click on “file a business document.” Then follow the pages from there. However, there is much more paperwork and legal work to starting a business in Colorado than just registering with the Secretary of State and all of the various steps must be performed in order to be legal. The SBDC teaches a three-hour class called Start-Up Basics every two weeks which covers all of these essential procedures. I strongly urge you to sign up for this class as soon as you can.

Dear Jim, I would like to know the procedure of starting an oil and gas drilling equipment company. Could you point me in the right direction?

The procedures for starting an oil and gas equipment company are basically the same as for starting any other kind of company in Colorado. But there is much more to do than I could explain in a short email. I strongly suggest that you sign up for the Start-Up Basics class at the Denver Metro SBDC. This is a three-hour class that is taught every two weeks and covers all of the paperwork and procedures for starting a new business. Just register at www.denversbdc.org/seminars.
