Trout Tank H2O: Pitch Accelerator -
Making a New Splash with the H2O Component

The business of water is a big industry - $600 billion globally. And, it is more than just turning on your tap – water hits the nexus of agriculture, energy, bio-science, transportation, manufacturing, public health, outdoor recreation and tourism, business, and education - all the key pillars of our thriving economy, environment, and society.

Colorado, and the entire western region, face some difficult challenges related to water – natural disasters (drought, floods, wildfires), aging infrastructure, variability and uncertainty in supply, growing demand from booming population growth, etc.

These local, state, and federal concerns are driving the need for innovation within the sector and for businesses to help solve these critical challenges. Solving these challenges is the only way Colorado will continue to be successful and thrive. Our quality of life and economy depend on it.

As a headwaters state and one of the most entrepreneurial in the U.S., Colorado is positioned to be on the leading edge of water innovation, technology, and problem-solving.

Trout Tank H2O: Pitch Accelerator is about highlighting entrepreneurs and businesses with a water nexus and giving them opportunities to sharpen their pitching skills, gain exposure, secure funding, and build connections with lenders, investors, decision-makers, and key stakeholders within the Colorado business and water community.

Trout Tank H2O is about ensuring that the entrepreneurs who are stepping up to preserve and protect the things we love about living, working, and playing in Colorado are successful, which means we all get to continue to do the things we love.

Who Should Participate in Trout Tank H2O?

All startups and existing businesses with a water focus are welcome. Companies that participate in the Initial Pitches will be entered for a chance to pitch at the main event. The Denver Metro SBDC will work with you one-on-one to continue to perfect your pitch and polish your financials during the eight weeks leading up  to the event.
We're seeking Colorado entrepreneurs and business with a water nexus:

  • Food and Beverage
  • Energy
  • Agriculture
  • Water Law and Administration
  • Water Technology and Data
  • Water Conservation and Efficiency
  • Outdoor Recreation
  • Watershed Health and Natural Disaster Management
  • Water Quality

Entrepreneurs and businesses along the range from early-stage startups to more established companies are welcome. If you have an idea, product, or service that addresses a water-related challenge, you are a fit for this program.

What’s the Value for Participants?

Trout Tank H2O is the first of its kind program in Colorado brought to you by a collaboration between the Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce, Denver Metro SBDC, Denver Water, Colorado State University, and TAP-IN. The exposure, access, and training for you is a rare opportunity.

Participating entrepreneurs and companies are pitching to not only to increase their connections and gain visibility for their business, but the winner of the Trout Tank H2O Pitch Event will receive a $5,000 cash prize for your business, coaching sessions with entrepreneurial pioneers, and access to key stakeholders in your industry.

The Program

The Trout Tank H20: Pitch Accelerator kicks off with Initial Pitches where participants present their best five-minute pitch to their peers and a committee for feedback. Once participants have completed the initial pitch, the training begins.

During the Trout Tank H20: Pitch Accelerator, the Denver Metro SBDC and its partners will provide a Funding Options Panel, a special Trout Tank version of the Rockies Venture Club Pitch Academy, and a Funding Request Preview. Additional sessions related to water are under development. This training is meant to hone and strengthen participants pitches and prepare them for the Final Auditions as well as provide opportunities to strengthen your business.

At the Final Auditions, each participant will get to show what they have learned and pitch one last time for a panel of judges. The top pitches will be chosen to present at the Trout Tank H2O Pitch Event and compete for the $5,000 award!

Hear from a couple past participants below.

Anyone that has a type of business and wants to see it succeed, you need to be here. There’s so many things that we didn't even know until we got here that they really helped establish what it takes to be a successful business. We don’t have holes in our business plan now.”
-Will Kelsay, Co-Founder of Dirt-Tri Magazine, Winner of Trout Tank Spring 2016

Competing in the Trout Tank is not just about getting in front of lenders and investors...it’s about the process of distilling your vision down to 10 to 15 slides and communicating your dream in a compelling fashion in five minutes. The most valuable part of the entire process is the journey you take to get yourself prepared. Give yourself and your business the gift of playing full out.”
-Greg Durocher, Safe Ride 4 Kids, Winner of June 2015 Trout Tank
